Algebra I 

Course Description: A graduate level introduction to group theory. Topics include quotient groups, homomorphisms, group actions, Sylow theorems, composition series, simple groups, free groups, fundamental theorem of abelian groups.

Prerequisites: An undergraduate course in abstract algebra.

Suggested Text:   Algebra, Second Edition, by Michael Artin.

Coverage:   Chapters 2, 6 and 7,  selected topics from chapter 9.

 

Learning outcomes: Upon the successful completion of the course a student will:

understand  the fundamental algebraic concept of a group, its properties and applications
state definitions precisely
construct proofs of mathematical statements
read and understand proofs of mathematical theorems
apply theorems and learned techniques to new situations.
