Council of Department Chairs

The Council of Department Chairs is a standing committee at the University of South Alabama. The Council serves as a forum for Department Chairs to discuss issues and concerns that affect them, their department, college, faculty, and students. The Council meets twice per semester (normally in September, November, February, and April).

The Council supports excellence across diverse programs, facilitating leadership, teamwork, collaboration, professional growth, and resilience while reflecting the values of the institution. The Council of Chairs provides mentorship for new chairs, a supportive forum for discussions of the opportunities and challenges faced by chairs, and an opportunity to exchange ideas and strategies for best practice. The Council does not make policy. However, it works closely with the Faculty Senate and USA administration, and it may advise and make proposals or recommendations through those existing channels.

Mission

The mission of the Council of Department Chairs is to:

  1. Participate in designing and delivering training programs to support the development of existing and future Department Chairs.
  2. Identify and discuss professional matters of common interest to academic Department Chairs as they relate to their department, college, faculty, and students.
  3. Discuss successes and concerns unique to Department Chairs.
